Ġarra b’għonq wiesa’ / Jar with a wide opening

Ġarra b’għonq wiesa’, widna waħda u ta’ lewn kannella tleqq. Tingħalaq b’għatu jew taċ-ċeramika inkella b’xi għatu tas-sufra b’xi biċċa filoxx sabiex jirbot sewwa il-fetħa tal-ġarra. Fil-qedem, ma kienx ikollhom friġġ il-familji bħal ma nsibu illum, fejn jinżamm il-ħaxix frisk. L-alternattiva fiż-żmien tal-imgħoddi kienet tkun il-ħażna tal-ħxejjex, bħal basal tal-pikless u ġardiniera, ġewwa dawn il-ġarar wesgħin. Fuq dawn il-ġarar hemm  xi numri li jagħtu indikazzjoni tal-kapaċita’ tagħhom. Ħafna drabi dawn il ġarar kienu jinżammu fuq xi xkaffa fil-kċina jew ġo xi kantina friska.

 

A shiny brownish colour jar with a wide opening and one handle, with the top part glazed. It was probably closed with a ceramic lid or a cork with a piece of cloth so that it is tightly sealed. In the olden days, there were no fridges like there is today, where vegetables can be kept fresh. The alternative was to preserve vegetables, like pickled onions and giardiniera, in these wide jars. Numbers are shown which give an indication of the jars capacity. These jars were most likely kept on a shelf in the kitchen or in a cool basement.
